Our Franciscan Values Lead Us into the Future

Change can be unsettling. It can challenge what we know and leave us wondering what comes next. Yet change also invites us to return to the values that ground us.

Our commitment to service to the poor reminds us to look beyond ourselves. When circumstances are changing, it can be easy to focus on what we might lose or what the future holds. Franciscan spirituality calls us instead to notice those who are most vulnerable and to respond with compassion. Serving others gives us a way to turn uncertainty into an opportunity for love in action.

Humility and simplicity offer another way forward. Our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, chose a life that was simple, though not easy. He gave up his family’s wealth and status and put his trust entirely in God. His example reminds us that we do not need to have everything figured out or hold tightly to what is familiar. Humility allows us to listen, learn, and recognize that we might not have all the answers. Simplicity helps us focus on what is essential, keeping our attention on the people and purposes that matter most.

Finally, community reminds us that we do not face change alone. Franciscan spirituality sees every person as a brother or sister and calls us to build relationships rooted in compassion, respect, and mutual care. In uncertain times, we can listen to one another, make room for different perspectives, and walk together toward what comes next.

Change will always bring questions we cannot answer in advance. Franciscan values equip us to meet those questions with open hands and a generous heart.
